Gyeonggi Province will start a kind of visiting reading guidance service in mid-March, where a professional reading instructor visits families with three-year-old infants to lend books and guide reading.
According to Gyeonggi Province on the 7th, the province decided to implement the "infant book package" project from the 15th of this month for six cities and counties in northeastern Gyeonggi Province, including Pocheon, Yangpyeong, Yeoju, Dongducheon, Gapyeong and Yeoncheon.
The project aims to narrow the reading welfare gap and improve the quality of life of provincial residents for residents living in areas where library visits are difficult. There are a total of 25 public libraries owned by these six cities and counties, and it is not easy to use the library because it is often far from the actual residence and library.
The "infant book package" is a customized life-cycle reading promotion project where reading instructors visit the applicant's home to find out the applicant's reading taste and select books that fit the topic of interest.
The province will provide three to seven books once a month (10 times a year) to 3,500 children aged three years old living in six cities and counties. Reading guides who visit their homes lend books suitable for applicants every month, while also providing reading guidance for infants and parents for about 30 minutes.
Gyeonggi Province currently has 26 reading instructors and will recruit 14 more, with about 40 reading instructors active.
The province expects that the infant book package business will not only help children have a habit of reading books, but also ease parents' concerns about the cost of purchasing books and what books to choose. It is also expected to help create jobs in the region by expanding the number of reading instructors.
Cho Chang-beom, head of the library policy division in Gyeonggi Province, said, "The infant book package project is meaningful in that it starts lifelong education by life cycle with books," adding, "I hope it will be a window for infants who have difficulty in communicating with society through Corona 19."
Children's book packages can be applied online through the communication and participation menu or banner on the Gyeonggi Provincial Government website (www.gg.go.kr) by April 30. Contact 031-8008-4614.
