○ Expectation of eliminating blind spots in animal protection welfare and continuous interest in pet medical services
Gyeonggi provincial government announced on the 16th that it will push for a "support project for pet medical services for vulnerable households" to ease the burden of pet care for the socially considerate class from March this year to improve the level of universal animal welfare.
The project is a newly introduced animal protection project this year as part of the 2021 Gyeonggi Province Animal Protection and Welfare Policy Plan announced at a press conference last month to realize Governor Lee Jae-myung's 7th popular election philosophy of animal welfare.
The main focus of the project is to support up to 200,000 won per household for the medical care and care of pets (puppies and cats) raised by low-income families, single-person households, and severely disabled people in the province.
Those eligible for the support include low-income, severely disabled, single-parent families, multicultural families, and single-person households among 13 cities and counties who participate in the 2021 project, including Suwon, Goyang, Yongin, Seongnam, Anyang, Pyeongtaek, Gwangju, Icheon, Hanam, Guri, Yeoju and Gapyeong.
This year, the first year of the project, a total of 800 people will be selected, and if they are selected, they will receive support for medical fields such as vaccination, neutralization, basic checkups, treatment, and surgery, as well as expenses for pet care (up to 10 days).
If you submit an application to the nearest Eupmyeon-dong administrative welfare center or by phone, receive services from animal hospitals and animal consignment management companies, and submit it to the city and county with evidence such as receipts, support will be provided within 200,000 won.
In order to receive services, pet registration must be completed in accordance with the Animal Protection Act. Provided, That pets shall be supported regardless of whether animals are registered or not.
Through this project, it is expected to increase animal welfare of pets by providing medical services to pets that cannot be treated on time due to economic burdens, and to bring out positive effects such as "reduction of loneliness," "satisfaction with life," "vigor of life" and "improvement of confidence."
In particular, the provincial government plans to listen to opinions from provincial residents who received support and refer them to the future direction of animal welfare for pets for social consideration classes.
Kim Sung-sik, director of the Livestock Forest Bureau, said, "As animal welfare is welfare for people, we will continue to pay attention to and support the welfare of people and animals coexisting as a pet medical service to solve blind spots for the socially caring class."
