Pilot installation of multi-functional air purification system for fine dust and viruses in elementary school classrooms
○ 5 places including Seoho Elementary School in Suwon City, Taebong Elementary School in Pocheon City, Bumbak Elementary School in Bucheon City, Sanbon Elementary School in Gunpo City, and Gamjeong Elementary School in Gimpo City are installed.
- 98.6% fine dust removal filter, 90% virus and bacteria removal UV-LED, etc.
- Clean ventilation without opening the window and heat exchange without loss of heat in the room.
○ Expanding the distribution of schools in the province according to the results of performance verification
# On the 11th, 20 students were concentrating on classes at Taebong Elementary School in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, and the newly installed air purifier was operating continuously with the opening of the school in March.
On this day, the fine dust emergency reduction measure was issued, and the outdoor ultrafine dust concentration exceeded 100 micrograms per cubic meter, which was "very bad," but the ultrafine dust concentration in the classroom remained below 35 micrograms under the School Health Act.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 17th that it will install a "multifunctional air purification system" at five elementary schools in the province, including Seoho Elementary School in Suwon City, to reduce fine dust and viruses at the same time.
Air purifiers were installed in each classroom due to the revision of the School Health Act in 2019, but some schools did not operate properly due to the spread of infectious diseases. In addition, the existing air purifier only has a function to remove fine dust, which made it inconvenient to open windows separately for ventilation even on days when fine dust concentration is high.
The device has a function to reduce various sources of infection in the air, such as viruses and bacteria, as well as to remove fine dust. At the same time, it also has a "clean ventilation" function that allows ventilation without opening windows and a "heat exchange device" that minimizes changes in indoor setting temperature, which minimizes energy loss.
The fine dust filter consists of a pre-filter that removes large dust, a HAPA-filter that removes ultrafine dust, and an antibacterial filter that skips suspended bacteria. In the performance test of filter products conducted by a public certification agency (Fiti Testing Institute), the efficiency was high enough to remove 98.6% or more of fine dust. In addition, UV-LED devices, which reduce viruses and bacteria, also showed the ability to remove more than 90% of airborne infections through module tests.
In addition, special motors installed inside the device allow the air purifier to operate at a low noise of 50 dB or less while maintaining strong performance, which does not interfere with students' study due to noise. At the same time, with a simple design considering safety, window-type and stand-type can be installed according to classroom situations.
As soon as the performance verification is completed, the provincial government will work with the provincial education office to expand the supply of schools in earnest according to the results.
"Thanks to the air purification system installed in Gyeonggi Province, it is good to ventilate with clean air on a fine dust day without opening windows," said A, a teacher at Pocheon Taebong Elementary School. "I hope it will be installed at other schools so that children can go to school safely."
We will do our best to successfully carry out the multi-function air purification system demonstration project so that the spread can be spread to all schools, said Park Sung-nam, director of the Gyeonggi Environment Bureau.
