홍혜걸 코로나19 신천지 행사진행 지복지부차관

2월12일. 대규모 확산의 원흉으로 지목받는 신천지 대구모임이 있기 나흘 전이다. 복지부 차관은 집단 행사를 평소처럼 진행하라고 말했다. 코로나와의 전쟁에서 승기를 잡아가고 있다거나 종식될 것이라며 정부가 앞장서서 떠들던 때였다. 그리고 한달뒤 확진자 8천여명으로 단위인구당 세계 1위와 100여개국 입국금지 국가가 됐다.

이번엔 빠른 키트검진으로 전세계 방역의 모범이 되고 있다는 소리가 튀어나왔다. 마찬가지로 정부였다. 그런데 바로 다음날 구로 콜센터에서 102명에 달하는 확진자 뉴스가 터져나왔다.

지금은 미국이 난리다. 트럼프를 비판하려는 민주당과 언론을 중심으로 우리나라 빠른 키트가 쟁점으로 떠올랐다. 그러면서 세계가 우리를 칭찬한다고 또 입방정이다. 국내 키트의 위음성 등 합리적으로 제기되는 비판도 묻혀 버린다. 나는 미국이 코로나를 나름대로 잘 해결하리라 생각한다. 존스홉킨스대의 국제방역지수 GHS 세계 1위 국가가 미국이다. 트럼프의 비상선포후 주가가 오히려 크게 올랐다. 미국 걱정할 때가 아니란 소리다. 다른 나라에서의 확산을 속으로 비웃는 사람들에게 대만은 보이지 않는가 보다.

묘하게도 요즘 마스크 안쓴 사람들이 코로나 사태 초기때보다 오히려 자주 목격된다. 오늘까지 서울과 경기지역 확진자가 500명에 달한다. 언제든 방심하면 전국적으로 대규모 지역감염 사태가 발생할 수 있다. 우리는 이미 대구경북에서 국가적 역량을 벗어난 감당못할 판데믹을 경험했다. 불과 며칠전에 많은 확진자들이 집에서 그냥 기다리다 죽어갔음을 기억해야한다.

사람들은 나에게 비판만 하지말고 칭찬해달라고 부탁한다. 위기상황이므로 대승적 협조가 필요하다고도 말한다. 맞는 말이다. 그러나 지금처럼 자화자찬하는 분위기에서 무슨 칭찬을 하고 무슨 협조를 하란 말인지 묻고 싶다.

나는 사심이 없다. 사실 코로나 관련 글이나 영상을 올리는게 요즘은 많이 부담스럽다. 신천지, 극우, 토착왜구, 매국노 등등 혐오스런 비난이 댓글과 메시지로 마구 날아온다.

나를 비판하는 분들께 묻고 싶다. 이러한 나의 페북질이 나에게 도대체 무슨 실익이 있겠는가?
내가 정부를 비판해 미통당 공천이라도 바라는가? 거듭 말씀드리지만 나는 생래적으로 정치가 맞지 않는다. 싫은 사람 마주보며 억지로 웃지 못하고 극단적 지지자들에 의해 무등 태워지는 것도 부담스럽다.
집사람이나 내가 하고 있는 일에도 도움이 되지 않는다. 인구의 절반이 나를 미워하게 되니 좋을게 뭐가 있겠는가?

대구에 내려가서 자원봉사 안하느냐는 비아냥거림에 대해선 이미 이곳에 이유를 설명했으니 찾아보시기 바란다.

나는 진심으로 우리나라가 잘되길 빈다. 오래지 않아 역사는 코로나 사태를 평가할 것이다. 그때 누가 매국노이고 누가 애국자였는지 담담하게 지켜보고 싶다
